Tips to File Flood Insurance Claims
Flood Insurance is a necessity for a lender whose home is located in a flood plain. As a homeowner’s policy won’t cover your flood damages so buying flood insurance protect homeowners against losses from the floods. Flood insurance is relatively inexpensive and policies are available in three forms: Dwelling, General Property, and Residential Condominium Building Association Policy.
Claiming flood insurances are not easy but following few guidelines we can make a claim easily. Flood insurance policy requires you to give prompt written notice of loss. Ask your agent or company representative, how to file notice of claim or simply send a written notice to the company with policy number. Separate your damaged property from undamaged property, take photographs of property before disposing it of and keep samples of it as well.
List the quantity of each item, a description, brand name, where purchased, cost, model, serial number and estimate your lost amount. An adjuster will contact you usually within 2-3 days depending upon the local conditions. The adjuster will take measurements, photographs, and note the direct flood damage. Using the knowledge gained from the visits and the documents provided by you, adjuster complete a detailed estimate of damages.
Adjuster will provide you the Proof of Loss that includes a detailed estimate to repair or replace the damaged property. A fully accurate, complete and signed ‘Proof of Loss’ must reach the insurance company within 2 months after the loss occurs. A claim is payable only after your insurer receives Proof of Loss and you and your insurer connive on the amount of damages.
Any check for building property must include your mortgage name, or the name of the individual holding your mortgage whereas a check for personal property will usually be in your name only. You can also file a supplement claim if you notice additional damage to your property after filing your claim.
